Situated in the heart of Covent Garden, the building at 12 Maiden Lane was a disused 19th Century electricity generating hall. Planning permission was granted in 2004 to convert and extend the building into 14 residential apartments on the upper floors and a light industrial unit at ground floor level.
Subsequent planning applications altered the layout of the apartments as the building was stripped back, with the ground floor being changed to a restaurant
Avebury were brought onto the project in 2008 by ME Construction to complete stages 4 - 6 of the project, including the redesign of the internal spaces. Careful details and repairs to the existing building were a focus of the project, with the construction of the new floors ontop of the existing building posing a logistical challenge given the tight nature of the site.
The apartments were all sold for over £1m each, and artwork was installed on the outside of the building, consisting of a set of cogs which were salvaged from the old electricity hall.
